Saunas Flush Out Toxins and Disease

Human beings have used sweat baths for hygienic and health purposes since the Stone Age. Our ancestors saw the value of sweating and flushing out toxins and disease as a way to maintain optimal physical and mental health.

Cultures around the world have versions of the sweat bath: The ancient Roman Thermae, the Japanese Onsen, the Russians Banya, and Native North American’s Inipi (sweat lodge), and the Turkish bath or Hamam. However, in the U. S. the Finnish Sauna seems most popular.

The Miriam-Webster Dictionary defines sauna as: 1. A special heated room in which people sit or lie down in order to get hot and sweat, 2. A Finnish steam bath in which the steam is provided by water thrown on hot stones, and 3. A dry heat bath; also: a room or cabinet used for such a bath.

The skin, largest organ in the body plays a major role in the detoxifying toxins through the pores. To regulate the body's elevated temperature, the skin produces sweat. The skin transforms toxins from lipid-soluble, fat or oil-based, into easier to eliminate water-soluble forms and flushes them out through the pores.

Our modern lifestyles can lead to inactive skin. Many of us don't sweat, especially during the winter months. Modern synthetic fibers, tight clothing that doesn't allow the skin to breathe, excessive prolonged sun exposure, and a sedentary lifestyle can damage our skin and inactivate the natural ability to eliminate toxins.

We are exposed to hundreds of chemicals during the course of our lives and our health is negatively impacted. Physicians and scientists are now acknowledging that regular sweating is a safe and natural way to heal. Sweating can detox toxic chemicals and metals from the body faster than any other method.

Physicians and scientists are now acknowledging that regular sweating is a safe and natural way to heal. From innocent bath products such as shampoos, shower gels, lotions and soaps to deodorants. Household cleaning solvents, detergent residues on clothes and chemicals from the bath or shower water also affect the skin.

Benefits of regular sauna use include: healthy sweating; toxin elimination; releases built up body tensions, aches and pains; peace of mind; and may stimulate the skin to produce white blood cells and strengthen the immune system. Sauna use increases and improves the rate of blood circulation and breathing creating an effect similar to mild exercise. It burns about 300 calories per average session and combined with a healthy diet and moderate exercise helps you lose weight, stay fit, and be healthy.

By enhancing circulation cells, tissues and organs receive greater oxygenation. Oxygen increases the body's energy and promotes healing. Heating the body’s tissues and speeds up the metabolism, as a result the cells are gradually capable of eliminating toxins much more effectively.

Dr. Whitaker, on his website, tells us there are tens of thousands of man-made chemicals in our environment, food, water and air. “No matter how pure your diet or lifestyle, I guarantee that your body contains traces of hundreds, if not thousands, of chemicals such as pesticides, drugs, solvents and dioxins.” Sweating is an effective way to get rid of them. According to Whitaker, your eccrine glands put out about a quart of sweat a day but in a sauna, they pump out a quart of sweat in 15 minutes.

A recent research study, the New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Project looked at the health of the firemen, policemen, and other rescue and cleanup workers bore the brunt of this environmental disaster when the World Trade Center buildings collapsed on September 11, 2001. As a result of the massive amounts of toxins that were released, they experienced acute respiratory distress and a wide range of health issues including gastrointestinal complaints, worsening pulmonary problems, depression, irritability and cognitive disorders.

The 500 rescue workers, mostly firefighters between the ages of 35 and 45, completed a sauna detox program with excellent results. After treatment the number missed work days per month dramatically decreased, symptom scores dropped dramatically, 84 percent of participants discontinued all their drugs because their symptoms had cleared up, and there was significant improvements in thyroid function, balance, reaction time and even IQ!

According to Whitaker, in article in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, reports a study in which endothelial cells lining the arteries improved functioning by 40 percent when participants spent15 minutes a day in a sauna a day for 14 days. Researchers in Japan found that sitting in a sauna is very beneficial for congestive heart failure. The Japanese subjects, with serious heart failure, took daily saunas for four weeks and 13 of 15 patients had significant decreases in blood pressure. The Japanese subjects also demonstrated improvements in the heart’s pumping ability, exercise tolerance, and oxygen uptake.

Sauna use is considered helpful for:
                        Chronic fatigue
                        Mild depression
                        Rheumatoid arthritis
                        Musculoskeletal pain
                        Skin conditions

Some individuals prefer a far infrared sauna because it is part of the natural light spectrum.  Many consider it to be more comfortable. Typical saunas heat the air when the hot air contact the skin the body heats up. Far infrared light heats up the core body temperature by penetrating tissues directly and deeply. Because the air in the far infrared sauna is much cooler it easier to breathe and this allows you to stay in longer and work up a better sweat.

David Ewing Duncan published an article titled "The Pollution Within", in the 2006 October issue of National Geographic Magazine. His goal was to investigate what chemicals were hiding in his body. He found high levels of flame-retardants, pesticides, and dioxins that must have been acquired more recently. He also found high levels of DDE and PCBs that he had most likely absorbed as a child, which had never been processed out of his body.

A sauna assists the liver and kidneys with the process of body detoxification and is the only way to detoxify fat stored poisons. The heat loosens stored toxins, which are temporarily deposited into the bloodstream causing some first time sauna to experience a really bad headache when toxins enter the bloodstream.

The blood is pumped out to the surface of the skin to be cooled. The cooling process causes toxins to be expelled through the skin’s pores in the sweat solution. In other words the sauna facilitates the body’s natural working process of detoxification and powerful healing abilities.

If you find yourself trapped in a sedentary lifestyle because of work and family commitments or physical limitations, consider getting a home sauna and developing the sauna habit. I have recently started using a traditional sauna, hot air only, after my swimming session---three times a week for three weeks. I am thrilled by the results: decreased allergies, lungs feel stronger, skin looks livelier, muscle tension/cramping decreased, and I feel energized.

French Maritime Pine Bark: Pycnogenol

It is summer “cold” season. A fever in the winter is bearable but a fever in the summer heat it is hideous. My favorite herb for colds and flu is pine bark.

The active ingredient in French Maritime Pine Bark is pycnogenol. Pycnogenol is any group of flavinoids (chemical molecules) extracted from pine bark. Pycnogenol® has become the registered trademark of supplements made from French maritime pine trees.

A French explorer discovered the benefits of French maritime pine bark extract in the 1500′s. The largest maritime pine trees forest is located in southwestern France near the Bordeaux region. This forest plantation dates back to the times of Napoleon III. The maritime pine tree can be found throughout parts of Spain, Italy, Morocco and Portugal. In the 1950′s Jacques Masquelier began to seriously research beneficial properties of pine bark.

French maritime pine bark (pinus pinaster) comes from trees that grow in the Landes Forest of southwestern France. It should not be confused with White Pine Bark (pinus strobes). White pine is also known as: Eastern White Pine, Northern White Pine, Pumpkin Pine, Soft Pine, Deal Pine, Weymouth Pine, Pin du Lord, and Pinus Alba. The White Pine is an evergreen conifer native to eastern North America and has been cultivated throughout Europe. Medicinal White Pine Bark comes from the inner bark of the White Pine tree, or from young shoots and twigs. The bark is dried, and then used in powdered form, tea, syrups, as a poultice, and in capsules.

I have never used White Pine as an herbal medicine. I am however a true believer in French Maritime Pine Bark, Pycnogenol. It helped me with a terrible case of bronchitis and a sinus infection.

The makers of Pycnogenol®, French maritime pine bark (pinus pinaster), follow good agricultural practice (GAP) and good manufacturing practice (GMP). This means there is absolutely no application of pesticides to pine trees or use of toxic solvents during the manufacture.

French maritime pine bark (pinus pinaster), Pycnogenol has been researched extensively. It is used for treating circulation problems, allergies, asthma, ringing in the ears, high blood pressure, muscle soreness, pain, osteoarthritis, diabetes, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a disease of the female reproductive system called endometriosis, menopausal symptoms, painful menstrual periods, erectile dysfunction (ED), and an eye disease called retinopathy.

Pycnogenol is used to slow the aging process, maintain healthy skin, improve athletic endurance, and improve male fertility. It is also used for preventing disorders of the heart and blood vessels, including stroke, heart disease, and varicose veins. Anti-aging” products contain pycnogenol.

Two capsules are taken 2 hours before the flight and then again 6 hours later. Also, taking pycnogenol 100 mg before a flight, 6 hours after the flight, and the following day appears to reduce the risk of blood clots forming in the veins during long flights, and once the next day reduces swelling and ankle swelling.

The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center website tells us Pycnogenol is derived from the bark of the French maritime pine tree. Studies have displayed effectiveness in treating many inflammatory conditions, skin disorders, and poor blood circulation. Pycnogenol has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is effective in treating erectile dysfunction when used in combination with L-arginine. Recent animal studies show pycnogenol exhibits protective effects against cardiac toxicity caused by the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin, however human data is needed.

The Memorial Sloan Kettering website reports the primary constituents of pine bark extracts are procyanidins and phenolic acids. Pine bark extract acts as an antioxidant by increases the activities of antioxidant enzymes and by increasing the intracellular glutathione levels. It inhibits production the proteins that cause inflammation and atherosclerosis.

An in vitro (in the test tube) study suggests that Pycnogenol induces apoptosis in human breast cancer cells causing them to die. Other in vitro studies show it reduces neuronal apoptosis (neuron death), an important factor of Alzheimer’s disease.

There are no known interactions with foods.

Scientific research has studied the following dosages by mouth:
For allergies: 50 mg twice daily.
For asthma in children: 1 mg per pound of body weight given in two divided doses.
For poor circulation: 45-360 mg daily, or 50-100 mg three times daily.
For diseases of the retina, including those related to diabetes: 50 mg three times daily.
For mild high blood pressure: 200 mg of pycnogenol daily.
For improving exercise capacity in athletes: 200 mg daily.

Special precautions & warnings:

Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center tells us pycnogenol is effective for treating allergies, however for some people pyncogenol is actually an allergen. Some rare and possibly fatal allergies can develop. Signs of an allergic reaction to including wheezing or shortness of breath, rash, chest pain, and swelling of body parts including the face, hands or feet.

If pregnant or breast-feeding pycnogenol should be used cautiously or avoided as there is not enough available research. It may be safe for children when taken by mouth, short-term. If you have an autoimmune disease it’s best to avoid using pycnogenol. High doses of pycnogenol might increase the risk of bleeding in people with bleeding conditions. High doses of pycnogenol might decrease blood sugar too much in people who are taking diabetes medication. Stop using pycnogenol at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery as it might increase the chance of bleeding during and after surgery.
Because pycnogenol increases the immune system it might decrease the effectiveness of medications that decrease the immune system (Immunosuppressants).

Avoid taking pycnogenol with aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Avoid taking pycnogenol with herbs and supplements that can lower blood sugar such as alpha-lipoic acid, chromium, devil's claw, fenugreek, garlic, guar gum, horse chestnut, Panax ginseng, psyllium, Siberian ginseng, and others.

Avoid using pycnogenol with herbs that slow blood clotting such as angelica, clove, danshen, garlic, ginger, ginkgo, Panax ginseng, and others.

Far Infrared Lamp

My near fatal brush with illness as a child created in me a serious, contemplative nature. My time in the hospital left me very empathetic and compassionate for anyone with an illness, or a disease of mind, body, or spirit. I have been on a life long vision quest--the search for good health. What does it mean to live healthy? I believe for every question there is an answer. My spiritual nature tells me the Creator has created an answer for illness and disease and that is my driving force. I may not be the person the Creator inspires with the healing innovation, but I can be the person to get the word out!
At first I questioned what kind of spiritual gift I had. If I am not the innovator, scientist or inventor, what did I offer the equation? My gift—I am a spiritual cheerleader! Has something made you feel dis-eased? You can find your ease—state of balance, centeredness and harmony! I believe this—I know this! This is self-empowerment.
I was surprised the first time I realized that some individuals have great difficulty choosing a course of action, or making a decision—because this is the complete opposite of my personality. We as individuals tend to think everyone else shares the same worldview—how naive we are sometimes.
One of the innovations I have tried is a far infrared lamp. All of my life I had had chronic muscle aches and a tendency to tendonitis. With aging, my ability to tough it out and convince myself all would be better tomorrow was no longer working. I had passed some kind of tipping point. My body was now in agony. My chiropractor was commenting on the fact that my lateral back muscles were so tight they were raising my right hip. Massage helped but I needed something daily—something I could do at home. I remembered my Mother had a heat lamp—maybe this is what I need. As much as I like to claim I am different than my mother, the truth is—we are practically genetic twins.
There are many companies selling therapeutic energy products. An individual has to do their homework before deciding how to invest their money. An individual might consider a far infrared sauna, lamp, or clothing. I chose the FIR lamp; it seemed to have the most utility in my lifestyle.
According to the manufacturer’s web site, my Far Infrared Mineral Lamp features a round plate coated with a proprietary mineral clay formation consisting of 33 earth elements essential to the human body. When activated by the built-in electric heating element, this mineral plate emits a special band of far-infrared waves ranging from 2 to 25 (microns) in wavelength that coincides with the wavelengths and intensity of the electromagnetic radiations emanating from the human body.  As a result, the far-infrared waves are readily absorbed.  The benefits are: raises temperature in tissue, Expansion of capillary vessels, Rejuvenation of cells, Promotion of blood circulation, Helps to move toxins from cells, Faster recovery from muscle strains, and Improvement in Lymphatic system.
Far Infrared Rays are invisible waves of electromagnetic radiation of wavelength greater than that of the red end of the spectrum, having wavelengths of 0.75-1000 μm. Infrared rays are sometimes subdivided into long-wave or far infrared (about 3.0-1000 μm) and short-wave or near infrared (about 0.75-3.0 μm). They are capable of penetrating body tissues to a depth of 10 mm. Sources of infrared rays include heat lamps, hot water bottles, steam radiators and incandescent light bulbs. Infrared rays are used therapeutically to promote muscle relaxation, to speed up the inflammatory process, and to increase circulation to a part of the body. Through the subtle heating, Far Infrared boosts our immune system, increasing the amount of white blood cells and killer T-cells.

It should be noted that the inflammatory process is the process of initiating healing by marshaling ones healing processes. It should be noted chronic inflammation is a reaction of tissue to irritation, injury, or infection, characterized by pain, redness, swelling, and sometimes loss of function.

FIR expands capillaries increasing oxygenation and regeneration of the blood deeply detoxifying and improving functioning of the major organs in the body. This deep detoxification dissolves or immobilizes toxins in the blood. FIR therapy may help in fat loss, chronic fatigue, water retention, skin disorders, as well as in the elimination heavy metals, poisons, and carcinogenic material from our bodies. FIR is beneficial in reducing muscle soreness, muscle spasms and provides relief for rheumatoid arthritis. Research by NASA has shown that far infrared on the cardiovascular system was a great way of keeping astronauts hearts’ in optimal condition. Far Infrared increases the enzyme activity in our digestive tract and boosts metabolism. An hour of this therapy can burn up to 900 calories helping to break down trapped fat, waste, cellulite and other forms of toxic substances. Far Infrared has been shown to help heal scar tissue.
Heart studies done by The Mayo Clinic and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that infrared sauna therapy significantly improved blood vessel functioning in high-cholesterol, diabetes and smoking patients. The therapy also was found to increase circulation, lower blood pressure, lower blood sugar, and help in weight loss.

The online article by Brent A. Bauer, M.D. reports the far-infrared sauna uses light to create heat. "Far" describes where the infrared waves fall on the light spectrum. An infrared sauna heats your body directly without warming the air around you. An infrared sauna produces these results at lower temperatures than does a regular sauna, which makes it accessible to people who can't tolerate the heat of a conventional sauna. Several studies have looked at using infrared saunas in the treatment of chronic health problems, such as high blood pressure, congestive heart failure and rheumatoid arthritis, and found some evidence of benefit, however, larger and more-rigorous studies are needed to confirm these results. On the other hand, no adverse effects have been reported with infrared saunas.
In an online article by Justin Tobias, M.D., revised by Stephanie Neumayer, M.D., describes information supported by randomized, controlled trials in peer-reviewed, medically respected journals. Saunas are noted as contributing to the improvement in patients with congestive heart failure, heart disease, mild depression, and chronic pain. It is noted that Creighton University Medical School's AltMed website explains individuals with a history of multiple sclerosis, hemophilia, hyperthyroidism, systemic lupus erythematous or adrenal suppression should not use an infrared sauna. Those who are pregnant, nursing or experiencing their menstrual flow should not use a sauna. Those with artificial joints, metal pins and silicone implants should also avoid saunas. The effects of some prescription drugs may be altered due to the high heat in a sauna.
